How it works

Mechanical Ventilation helps to create a healthy and clean indoor air environment while reducing household energy consumption.

Mechanical Ventilation efficiently combines supply and extract ventilation into one centralised system. Warm stale moist air is extracted from the wet rooms inside the house and travels through the ducting network.

Is Mechanical Ventilation For Me?

Mechanical Ventilation is a standalone ventilation system that does not require any other form of ventilation within the dwelling.

It is a ventilation unit that is located within a utility room or dedicated services room and has a network of rigid or flexible ducting located within the walls and floors of the building. ldeal whole house ventilation system for new build homes with a high level of airtightness.

For existing homes it is not alwavs practical to install the full required network of ducting to service every room, making Mechanical Ventilation less attractive for retrofit buildings. Mechanical Extract Ventilation (MEV) may provide a more suitable option.

System made of flexible ducts

A common mistake is to use this type of ducts on longer sections of the ventilation system. Understandably, it is much easier to run a network of flex ducts than rigid steel ducts, especially in a confined space such as under a ceiling, in a corner, or where there are also other systems. In such a situation, installers bend flexible ducts at large angles to a great extent, which has a destructive effect on the heat recovery unit's capacity. Flexible ducts, due to the lack of smooth internal structure, generate considerable pressure resistance, so we do not recommend them for installation directly at the heat recovery unit or on sections longer than 4 m.

Use high-quality ducting

A heat recovery system is only as good as the ductwork. It can be false economy to install the most expensive unit with substandard ducting.Selected and installed correctly, ducting improves and prolongs the efficiency of the whole system, leading to long-term low maintenance. On the other hand, a ventilation system that has issues with the ducting, which can range from 'slump' of flexible types, through to inadequate jointing mechanisms, is always going to underperform. Poorly installed duct work can potentially damage the ventilation unit and the fabric of the building.
